Carers urged to consider life insurance
February 03, 2012
People who provide unpaid care for a loved one should consider buying a life insurance policy, Sainsbury's Finance says.
People with dependants, including those who care for a sick or disabled loved one, should consider taking out life insurance, it has been claimed.
In an advertorial on the Insurance Age website, Sainsbury's Finance points out that people who provide unpaid care could leave their dependants in financial difficulty in the event of their own untimely demise.
"If the worst were to happen and you weren't around any more, how would those who depend upon you cope?" the life insurer asks.
"Have you or they put any provision in place for private care, or would they have to depend on social services?"
Sainsbury's Finance acknowledges that people often do not want to think about such situations, but that dealing with the reality would be "much harder" for those left behind.
Even carers on low incomes should be able to afford a life insurance policy, which can be purchased for as little as £6 a month
"While it's easy to overlook your own welfare when you're caring for a dependant, making your own personal finances a priority can help both you and the ones you love," the insurer adds.
More than six million people in the UK provide unpaid care for an ill, frail or disabled family member or friend, according to the charity Carers UK.
