Majority of Brits worry about future health

January 26, 2012

Research suggests that many people are failing to protect themselves by taking out critical illness insurance.

Two-thirds of Britons (67 per cent) worry about their future health, a new survey has found.

Yet despite the fact that two-fifths believe critical illness insurance would be 'nice to have', just ten per cent would automatically take out this type of insurance.

This compares with nine per cent who would take out mobile phone insurance as a matter of course, and 14 per cent who would prioritise pet insurance.

The survey, which was conducted by research firm 72 Point on behalf of Friends Life, also revealed that 20 per cent of participants had no contingency plan in the event they were unable to work due to illness.

Steve Casey, head of marketing and intermediary proposition development at Friends Life, said: "It is a fact of life that we seem to prioritise insuring things like our mobile phone or our pet over insuring our income.

"But the consequences of us being unable to work for a prolonged period, for example because of illness, can be severe."
